Project Description
The City acquired the eucalyptus grove in 1973 in conjunction with land purchased for an adjacent public golf course. To protect the habitat, Hirsch & Associates Inc. and the City of Huntington Beach devised a plan that included removing all dead trees, pruning dead branches from the living trees, planting replacement trees, and introducing a parasitic wasp that is a natural enemy of the long-horned borer beetle. In addition, pathways, park benches, and a tile mosaic monarch butterfly interpretive area were added in a section of the grove destroyed by fire. Approximately 5,000 monarch butterflies overwinter at the site each year. The butterflies fly in from the southern Sierras and the Rocky Mountains to spend November through March along the Southern
California coast and in Baja.
