The City of Long Beach and HAI undertook a Master Plan study of the City’s waterfront. The Beach Pedestrian Pathway was one of the identified projects within the Master Plan. HAI was contracted to design and engineer the proposed pedestrian pathway. The intent of the 3.1 mile pedestrian pathway is to provide an alternate jogging/walking pathway from the existing 17’ wide concrete bike lane and pedestrian path, reducing user group conflicts. The new 11’ wide pedestrian pathway features a user friendly flexible surface, distance markers, minor nodes for resting and ocean viewing as well as expanded ramping at the existing pier. Each minor node, 11 total, features a themed experience. Sitting rocks have been etched with pacific aquatic life shapes and names, infusing education and play into the experience.
